Bedroom Set in Cherry Posted January 15 2024
Cherry makes a nice wood for bedroom furniture with its' warm colors and accents. These pieces will be
with Kyoto style legs that will taper from the bottom to the top of the piece. The chest will feature a set of
graduated drawers and a double at the top, while the stands will have a single drawer at the top and open on the bottom.
Not having a lot of 8/4 or larger cherry, I laminated some 4/4 together for the small stands and saved the full size 8/4 to use for the larger chest. The front
dividers on the chest will be 3/4 cherry and are double-tenoned into the legs. All of the aprons and legs are assembled with mortise and tenon joinery while all
the drawers are of hand-cut dovetail joinery. The chest drawers feature through dovetails while the stands have a solid face attached to the drawer front.
The backs and sides of both the stands and chest have rabbited panels that are attached to the legs with a dado joint near the middle. A dado is also used in the
tops and bottoms of the aprons for the panels. None of these joints are glued to allow for seasonal wood movement.
Knobs are turned from solid ebony on the lathe and then glued into the drawer faces. The through dovetails add accents to the drawer faces on the chest.
I also built a set of walnut night stands with the exact diminsions for our guest house, but with an arc on the drawer bottoms.
